Thank you for taking the time to inquire about our domestic breeding program and the goals we as members of the North American Icelandic Horse Breeders, Inc. are striving towards with the incredible Icelandic horse. As individual farms we all come from different backgrounds with services. Northstar Farm is primarily a breeding facility with limit importing on a case-by-case request to one of the leading breeding farms in Iceland. No middlemen or sale agents to go through meaning whether domestic or import, you acquire quality horses at an affordable price. Breed description and history. With over 100 different color and pattern variations the Icelandic horse is classified as a four or five gaited riding horse best known for possessing a running walk called the tolt. This is a very smooth four-beat lateral gait requiring no need for posting and can be ridden at either a slow or fast tempo. Additionally, some Icelandic horses have developed a powerful fifth gait known as the flying pace, where literally all four feet are off the ground at the same time. The Icelandic horse is very versatile and may be found in various equine disciplines including dressage, endurance, western pleasure, cow working, gymkhana, penning, jumping, driving, and therapeutic. One of the strongest attributes for the Icelandic horse is it’s strength, capable of carrying in excess of 250 pounds for long periods of time and the ability to pull 1.6 times it’s own weight. The average Icelandic horse stands at approximately 13.2 hands but ranges from 12 -14.2 hands. It has a calm disposition and willing attitude. This combination is a win win situation for all concerned because it broadens the group of eligible riders. Now experienced but retiring seniors in addition to new students, overweight or physically/mentally challenged riders have the opportunity to pursue their hopes and desires with an equine friend, whether for pleasure, sport or companionship, which in turn allows for socializing and sharing of knowledge. For those of you that know Icelandic bloodlines, Northstar’s primary sire is the 1st Prize dun stallion Kolskeggur, son of the Honored 1st Prize Stallion Ofeigur 882 bloodline. We are also proud to have America’s first and only domestic born rated stallion, Herkir fra Northstar. The majority of our breeding mares are out of the Honored 1st Prize Stallion Kraflar fra Midsitju. The results of this combination is chiseled looks making the horse extremely recognizable as an Icelandic, strong gaits and most importantly great disposition providing you a well-rounded horse that may be used for pleasure trail, show, competition or base stock for breeding. Currently, Northstar Farm is the only farm in Ohio to have Icelandic rated prize stallions. With the conception of NAIHBA, which can be reviewed at www.icelandichorsebreeders.org, provides an open dialogue and services between breeders across North America. As such, Northstar Farm openly invites 1st Prize Stallions from other member farms to stand stud here in Ohio. This provides you the opportunity of breeding your mare to a stallion normally logistically to far away, or you may choose to create your own breeding program by matching one of our stallions to a Northstar broodmare under advisement.
